There are hundreds, if not thousands, of photographic dealers across the United States. Many of them I have never met, although I may have seen their ads or heard of them. Others I see perhaps once to twice a year at a collector's show somewhere. Still others I see all the time, it seems, at collector's shows, or have had the occasion to deal with them myself. I can recommend the dealers on this page as being reliable, honest and, for the most part, fairly priced in the equipment they offer. Of course, 99.9% of the dealers I have met over the past 30 years in this field are honest and reliable; the ones listed here I just happen to know best. For a wide variety of user equipment ranging from enlargers to lenses, lots of accessories, and everything in between, check in with Jay Rappaport or Ken Lonky. These two share a warehouse space in New Jersey; you'll find them at most of the shows in New York, New Jersey and western Pennsylvania, and they both do mail order. Matt Duren operates ForMatCamera in North Carolina; he deals in a wide range of high-quality collectible and shooting equipment and is extremely knowledgable. Pacific Rim Camera is one of the friendliest firms I've had the pleasure of running into over the years at shows in California. Knowledgable, with a wide range of collectible and usable equipment, both online and in a printed catalog. King of the hill in terms of used equipment is KEH Camera (that's K E H, as in initials, and not "Key" as some would have it). A constantly changing inventory, a nicely put up printed catalog, and a website that's a dream to negotiate through and order from, they've set some standards to be met. Looking for a wide range of collectible and usable equipment and accessories, without getting that feeling that you"re in Tiffany's? Visit BPW Limited Photographic Equipment. Brian Wolfe has a real store in Culver City, California, in addition to his internet site (we've visited the site, but never been in the store--yet). His site is easy to browse; things are easy to find, and it seems like he has a wide variety of useful things. It would be tough to refuse Richard Pinto's request for a link to his PhotoVillage, especially after he spent money with me. I've visited his site, and find it interesting. PhotoVillage specializes in high-end equipment and collectibles, such as Leica, Nikon, Linhof, Hasselblad. It seems to be expanding, and one of the nicest parts of the site are the extensive listings of galleries, workshops, and manufacturers. |
