Samuel Bourne (1834-1912)

Born in Nottingham, England, Bourne formed a partnership in Indian in 1863 with Charles Shepherd. He photographed extensively until 1872, and led three expeditions to the Himalayas. He is reported to have made some 1,5000 negatives in the Far East, and was recognized for the clarity and tonal range he achieved with the wet plate process.

Each print here is originally mounted on an 18x22-inch heavy gray board, with a hand-penned calligraphic title at the bottom.

#11495.  Bailey Guard,--Residency and Court, by Bourne  12x9-inch image. Strong view looking across large open area to row of buildings. Tree in center foreground, two laden oxen carts at left. Classic Bourne, #1025. EX.  $185.00 Image Detail
